Introduction - Who am I

Hi there,

My name is Saoirse Cullinane. I am 22 years old and starting into my fourth, and final year, in the accounting stream of the Bachelor of Business course in SETU. I chose this course as I always had an interest in business in secondary school but wasn’t sure what area I was most interested in. This course allowed me to try out the different areas of business in my first two years before selecting a stream to specialize in. During my first two years I took a liking to accounting and enjoyed those modules the most, so I decided to stick with it.

In the second semester of the third year, we took part in a flexible semester. There were many options here on what we could’ve chosen to do during this semester, such as Erasmus, teaching and placement. I decided to go with placement as I was interested in knowing what the job of an accountant entailed. I was also hoping that taking part in placement in an accounting firm would give me the reassurance I felt I needed in ensuring that a career in accounting would be the career for me.

I conducted my fifteen-week work placement period in J.P. O’Donohue & Co. Company Accountants. Here, I got involved in many roles in the office and used many IT software’s there. Examples of software I used during my time there are excel, for VAT calculations, SAGE for taking account of income and expenses, inventory and organizing invoices, ROS to do out VAT returns and observe a client’s position in relation to taxes and Big Red Book for payroll.

I found placement an enjoyable experience and an experience I’m glad I got to have. It gave me an opportunity to develop skills such as communications skills and accounting software. I also liked how it gave me a chance to experience office life and see how different an accounting job is compared to the classroom.

In next week’s upload I will be discussing project management and information systems implementation, topics we are currently discussing in class.

Until next time,

Saoirse 😊
